Like many people, I am afraid. I am afraid that humanity’s lack of action on climate change has not only planted, but has watered and fertilized the seeds of our own destruction. I am afraid that it is too late, and that the election and power of politicians like Trump and Andrew Scheer is only making things worse. I’m afraid for myself and for any children I may choose to bring into this world. But these fears are not why I’m voting Green.
I know that a lot of people who share my fears are considering strategic voting. It’s a natural response: we want to avoid our worst fears, so while we aren’t getting exactly what we want, at least it’s not as bad as it could be. Strategic voting is what Trudeau is counting on to retain power in the next federal election, and it’s one of the main reasons I voted Liberal in 2015. (Trudeau’s promise to eliminate first-past-the-post elections was my other main reason.) But this time around, I cannot in good conscience allow myself to be ruled by fear. I am afraid, but the devastating events of the past few years have shown me where fear can lead. I’ve now reached a point where I need to stand for what I believe is right. I can’t just run away from my fear, I need to run toward a better world, and take steps to make this better world exist. I need to sow and nurture the seeds of hope. This is why I’m voting Green.
